Social Impact Commons team member Thaddeus Squire is thrilled to be the featured speaker for Venture Café Philadelphia, powered by the Science Center in Philadelphia.
Through a provocative presentation and discussion, we will explore the historical, legal, and political basis for re-framing the nonprofit sector as a public commons and nonprofit organizations as commons managers. This understanding of the nonprofit sector grounds an analysis of how the nonprofit, for-profit, and government sectors can work together to advance social impact goals. We will present key questions, benefits/drawbacks, and other decision-drivers for social entrepreneurs to consider in determining whether to work under for-profit, nonprofit, or blended models. The presentation will include some basics on what defines non-profit vs. for-profit, and the relative strengths and weaknesses of both sectors in supporting social impact outcomes.
This session will offer a fresh look at the nonprofit sector and how it relates to the private sector and government in the greater project of advancing social good. It will cover key considerations in determining whether to take a for-profit, non-profit, or blended approach to social impact work. What are the decision drivers and strengths/drawbacks of working across each of the three sectors: government, nonprofit, and for profit?
