Fiscal sponsorship is enjoying an era of growing interest, expansion, and field maturation as the national conversation around impact in the nonprofit sector fuels interest in restructuring for greater efficiency and capacity. We feel the need for new, more immediate and unified ways to talk about our work and impact, starting with our name. Social Impact Commons has been working to align fiscal sponsorship with the growing movement around commoning, an ancient area of practices focused on sharing resources for social good. We have re-framed fiscal sponsorship as management commons, acknowledging its public status and cooperative mode of management and including an intentional shift in language and value framing. This session will present the origins and ideas of this new framework, as well as an accompanying Impact Model we are proposing for the field, centered on metrics that center sharing, equity, and human flourishing as the purpose of commons management.
