This two-part series co-hosted by the COVID Conversations and Social Impact Commons explores opportunities and considerations for fiscal sponsors supporting nonprofit work outside of the United States. Our intention in this two parter is to help fiscal sponsorship practitioners better evaluate and support foreign activity. Although not required, we highly recommend practitioners attend both sessions. Some questions (among others) we’ll discuss include:
What role can fiscal sponsorship play on the global stage to make a difference?
Should established fiscal sponsors develop more international capacity or should established international organizations develop fiscal sponsorship practices (or both) and are there partnership opportunities to explore?
What are some potential traps for practitioners new to international work?
What kind of investments in our organization’s capacity are needed to support substantial foreign activities?
How do we get matched with and support mission-aligned foreign projects?
How do I know what laws I need to comply with?
How are (and how aren’t) equivalency determinations and expenditure responsibility relevant to public charities? What are options/benefits/drawbacks for hiring foreign workers?
Part I: Planning your Itinerary
Fiscal sponsors are increasingly called upon to work with programs engaged in foreign activity. Sometimes this means hosting a long-term program with operations outside the U.S. and other times it may mean providing emergency assistance in response to armed conflict or other catastrophes. Join us as our international NGO veteran Asta Petkeviciute welcomes special guest Marnie Webb from TechSoup Global to talk about their International Philanthropic Supply project and opportunities and considerations for fiscal sponsors to leverage their nonprofit status, people, and systems to advance important work around the globe.
